<image:title>Healthy Aging - Culturally Responsive Dementia Care For the South Asian Community</image:title>
<image:caption>South Asian residents with dementia and their family caregivers face unique challenges throughout the journey of care - from early diagnosis to end-of-life care. Lack of knowledge and stigma against mental health issues, a fear of discrimination by the community and health care providers, beliefs against seeking professional help, and an unavailability of culturally inclusive services are all barriers South Asian Canadians face when accessing dementia care services (Holmes, 2018) In response to these challenges, the Social Planning Council of Ottawa, Champlain Community Support Network and the Indo-Canadian Community Center Seniors Program hosted a forum to explore the development and implementation of an adult day program for people with dementia of South Asian descent.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Healthy Aging - Elder Abuse and Neglect: Ethno-Cultural Communities Facilitator’s Resource Guide</image:title>
<image:caption>This Resource Guide was developed as part of the “Collectively We Care – Collectively We Help” Forum held on October 16, 2019. The Forum was hosted to educate ethno-cultural seniors in Ottawa about what constitutes elder abuse. More importantly, it was geared to service providers to enhance their understanding of the needs of ethno-cultural seniors in order to develop services and resources to meet the growing needs of this population. As a community we appreciated the importance of service providers and seniors coming together to address the often hidden issue related to elder abuse and to develop ethno-cultural sensitive solutions. The Resource guide provides information to both deliver talks and to facilitate discussions in the community as a tool for raising awareness about ageism and elder abuse. It includes notes on facilitating open discussion with groups based on culturally appropriate narratives and videos. The Resource Guide has been designed to support bilingual community volunteers to deliver community education. A Powerpoint presentation is also available for download.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This practical volunteer training and support guide was created to help ethno-cultural seniors’ groups develop and conduct formal culturally appropriate volunteer training and support. The training guide will enhance the volunteer work currently done by the different communities and will meet the need for more formalized training and support that has a cultural component. The guide is intended to help increase the capacity and sustainability of existing ethno-cultural groups in Ottawa who provide volunteer services. It is also meant to act as a resource to mentor young people from different cultural backgrounds who want to volunteer in their own community, to help them learn and practice their language skills, and to increase knowledge of their own cultures of origin. Funding provided by the Government of Canada, New Horizon for Seniors Program. The Guide is also available in: French Chinese Spanish Punjabi Vietnamese</image:caption>

      <image:title>Healthy Aging - MIcro-Funding Initiative for Seniors: Evaluation Report</image:title>
<image:caption>The Micro-Funding Initiative for Seniors project was funded by Employment and Social Development Canada from May 2013 to March 2014 to test a new delivery model to provide a cost-effective and critical “on the ground” culturally sensitive services to seniors and other vulnerable populations within ethno-cultural communities in Ottawa. The model used an established not-for-profit (Social Planning Council of Ottawa) as a central granting agency through which to channel funds to small ethno-cultural organiations with less organizational capacity. The project was to help address the needs and challenges facing ethno-cultural organizations serving seniors in ways that were cost-effective and consequential, including the provision of micro-funding to better serve their seniors. <image:caption>South Asian patients with dementia and their family caregiversface unique challenges throughout the journey of care - from early diagnosis to end-of-life care. Lack of knowledge and stigma against mental health issues, a fear of discrimination by the community and health care providers, beliefs against seeking professional help, and an unavailability of culturally inclusive services are all barriers South Asian Canadians face when accessing dementia care services (Holmes, 2018). In response to these challenges, the Social Planning Council of Ottawa, Champlain Community Support Network, and Indo-Canadian Community Center Seniors Program hosted a forum to explore the development and implementation of an adult day program for dementia patients of South Asian descent.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Healthy Communities - Neighbourhood Equity Index</image:title>
<image:caption>The Neighbourhood Equity Index is a powerful resource to build momentum and action for access to resources and opportunities to thrive in every neighbourhood. Across Ottawa neighbourhoods, there is significant inequity, affecting quality of life in the present as well as long term social, economic and health outcomes for residents. Based on the World Health Organization’s Urban HEART (Health Equity Assessment and Response Tool), the NEI provides an evidence-based framework to tackle this geographically-based inequity through: Assessment: The index assesses and compares inequities at a neighbourhood level, providing an overall equity score for each neighbourhood as well as an equity score for five domains: health, physical environment, economy, social development, community and belonging. Response: The NEI focuses action around key cross-neighbourhood themes impacting neighbourhood equity (such as economic opportunity, mental wellness and safety). It is intended to mobilize partnerships and resources to address inequity in the geographic distribution of resource and the existence of inequitable opportunities to thrive. SPCO leads and manages the NEI, which is co-facilitated and supported by the United Way of Eastern Ontario and City of Ottawa. The NEI was supported by United Way of Eastern Ontario, the City of Ottawa, the Ottawa Community Foundation and the Canada Summer Jobs program. See www.neighbourhoodequity.ca. <image:title>Mental Wellness Research - Reimagining Crisis Intervention: A Review of the Literature on Best Practices in Community-Based Crisis Intervention (Hussein, N. 2021)</image:title>
<image:caption>A mental health crisis is a terrifying and traumatic experience to go through; it can be made even worse if the intervention used is prolonged or handled poorly. Crisis interventions are the methods used to help distressed individuals cope with their crisis from its critical moment towards recovery and follow-up. Literature about crisis intervention indicates that racialized persons with mental illness (PMIs) are disproportionately more likely to be injured or die after police encounters in the US, UK, Australia and Canada. Aside from police who have been assigned as first responders to crises, the other most common crisis intervention model is the co-responding police-mental health program. Such programs reflect a partnership between mental health agencies and law enforcement agencies to build more efficient ways to handle PMIs. However, there has been limited evidence regarding whether co-responding police-mental health programs avert crisis escalation, improve officers’ perceptions of individuals who have a mental illness or are cost-effective. Moreover, the evaluation of co-responding models has not produced clear findings that could identify it as ‘best practice’ at diverting PMIs from the judicial system or reducing the likelihood of police brutality. Evidence shows that investment in community-based crisis intervention programs involving interagency collaboration between service providers can foster collective impact in reducing the exposure of PMIs to the criminal justice system. A community-based approach effectively supports PMIs with diversion, treatment, and recovery while connecting them to community resources such as health care, stable and affordable housing, mentoring, conflict resolution, trauma-informed care, and employment services. Such initiatives are structured to address the root causes of mental illness by providing a supportive environment to help people overcome their challenges and tackle their socio-economic and health issues. This report provides information on: the impacts of the social determinants of health on mental health crisis intervention, barriers to effective crisis intervention based on the current system, facilitators for effective crisis intervention that support persons with mental illness, especially those who are racialized and disproportionately affected by traditional policing, and existing non-police and community-based crisis intervention models.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A mental health crisis is a scary experience and depending on the practices used to help the individual cope, the outcome can lead to a healing journey or, on the opposite spectrum, cause irreversible harm in the form of involuntary hospitalization, arrest or brutality resulting in injury or death. The following best practices aim to effectively manage mental health crisis on-site and mediate impacts following the crisis, focusing on community-based, non-police mental health crisis response models.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Forum. Ottawa seniors come from many communities that speak over 93 different languages and have diverse cultural backgrounds. In many of the languages of these seniors, there is no word for ‘Elder Abuse’ and as such they do not talk about it openly in their communities. We held a forum, “Collectively We Care – Collectively We Help”, on October 16, 2019, with funding from the Government of Canada New Horizons for Seniors Program. The Forum was hosted to educate ethno-cultural seniors in Ottawa about what constitutes elder abuse. More importantly, it was geared to service providers to enhance their understanding of the needs of ethno-cultural seniors in order to develop services and resources to meet the distinct needs of these seniors. We appreciated the importance of service providers and seniors coming together to address the often hidden issue related to elder abuse and to develop ethno-cultural sensitive solutions. Download the Forum Report here. Facilitator’s Guide for Community Education. Following on the Forum, we developed a Resource Guide providing information to both deliver talks and to facilitate discussions in the community as a tool for raising awareness about ageism and elder abuse. It includes notes on facilitating open discussion with groups based on culturally appropriate narratives and videos. The Resource Guide has been designed to support bilingual community volunteers to deliver community education. Download the Facilitator’s Guide here. A powerpoint presentation is available here. Information Sheets on Elder Abuse in Multiple Languages. We also developed culturally-based information sheets to support discussion and improvement. Funding was provided by United Way East Ontario. <image:caption>Ethnic Flavors is a project developed in partnership with SPCO, Indo-Canadian Community Centre (ICCC) and Meals-on-Wheels agencies and provides ethnic meals to the seniors. Currently the program offers Indian Vegetarian meals, but we are developing other menu and ethnic choices. Community Flavors is a project pilot by Nutrition Blocs in partnership with SPCO and Parkdale Food Centre, that provides a biweekly Ethnic Grocery Box to three ethnocultural seniors groups – Latino, Haitian and African seniors. The project is funded by Ottawa Community Foundation and Mazon Canada. With a new grant from Mazon Canada, the pilot will expand to two more groups – Arabic/Middle Eastern and Indigenous seniors.</image:caption>
